Also includes 'History of The War in the North of New Zealand Against Chief Heke in the Year 1845 Told by an Old Chief of the Ngapuhi Tribe. Faithfully Translated by a "Pakeha Maori".' A nice copy in early half calf and marbled boards. Some edgewear and rubbing. Bookplate to pastedown and previous owner's name on to tp "H Stratton Bates, 65 Regiment". An account of life in New Zealand by Maning ("Pakeha Maori") who arrived in Hokianga in 1833 and lived and traded among the Maoris there. He identified completely with the Ngapuhi and married the sister of a chief. A rare association copy: Lt Colonel Henry Bates was ADC to Governor Grey and interpreter for General Cameron during the Wars. He was also a noted water colourist and like Mannng, also married a noted Maori woman. Good. Item #008702
