Item #013159 Essays on Physiognomy Designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind, Vol III. John Caspar LAVATER.

Essays on Physiognomy Designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind, Vol III.

London: 1810. Folio. Full Morocco. Vol III only. Pp xii, 252, plates. Full morocco, gilt page edges, marbled endpapers. Some edgewear and scratching to leather, otherwise very good. Spine states "Vol IV" but is actually third volume. Lavater (174-81-1801) was a Swiss theologian and poet, most noted for his work on physiognomy, relating cranial features with individuals. He was closely connected with the artist Fuseli, and with Goethe and Blake. This is a later English translation of the work, originally published in German between 1775 and 1778. Very Good.
