Mackinnon (1791-1836) was a Scottish officer who took an important part, and was wounded, in the Battle of Waterloo. In 1826 he became the Guards' commanding officer as Colonel. He wrote the history in response to a general request from William IV for commanding officers of Horse Guards regiments to provide histories, this being published in 1833.
