Isaac Watts (1674-1748) was a theologian and logician, noted for his hymn writing. His Logick was first published in 1724, went into about 20 editions, and was used as a textbook in the universities for over 100 years. It was written for beginners, addressing the four basic functions of the human mind: perception, judgment, reasoning, and disposition. Influenced by the empiricism of philosophers such as Locke, Watts gave rules and directions for any kind of inquiry, particularly inquiries into science and philosophy.
