Palgrave (1826-1888) travelled through Syria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman disguised as a Syrian physician. He was a Jesuit priest who later renounced catholicism, joining the Foreign Office with many posts abroad. This popular account of his Arabian travels was first published in 1865.
