No Binding. Hand-signed photograph of Felix von Luckner and his wife. "A happy return to Aitutaki.... Felix Count Luckner. 7/iii/38" 20 x 16 cm, glazed. Von Luckner (1881-1966), a German naval commander, took part in the battle of Jutland, and had a notable WWI record preying on allied ships taking food and raw materials to Europe. He moved to the Pacific, taking 3 schooners down in 1917 and visiting many of the islands, including posing as Dutch Americans in reaching Aitutaki in the Cook Islands. He was eventually captured near Fiji and taken to New Zealand. After repatriation to Germany at the end of the war, he returned to New Zealand with his Swedish wife Ingeborg Engeström, where he was warmly received. Very Good. Item #017583
