London: London Illustrated News, 1844. Folio. Hardcover. Original cloth, in fair condition, spine torn but restorable. Contains information on arts and sporting events, sailing, horse racing etc. NZ content includes Report on "Captain Ross' Discoveries in the Southern and Antarctic Seas". The collections of plant, animal and geological specimens had been unpacked after the four year voyage of exploration by the Erebus and Terror under Capt. Ross. Includes a small engraving of a polar bear on rocks, which of course is Arctic, not Antarctic. Long article on "The New Zealanders" including engravings of "New Zealand Dinner' showing Maori families eating outside a whare, "The New Zealand War Dance" showing a tattooed warrior executing a challenge, and "Rose", an engraving of a young Maori woman. The article covers a wide range of issues to do with the early years of the new colony, including on whether a military force is required to protect settlers. Sold with all faults. Fair.
