The Illustrated London News V 18, January-June

London: London Illustrated News, 1851. Folio. Hardcover. Original cloth showing wear, reasonably sound. Contains information on the Crystal Palace including large folding image. NZ content includes engravings of the settlement of New Plymouth and surroundings including Crofton Park, Omata District, Waitera River and Mokau river with accompanying text on the advantages of settling there, with a warning: "Men, who seek to gratify horrid selfishness, without regard to the future welfare of their children, will be disappointed if they expect all their troubles to cease on landing in New Zealand." Engravings of three Maori, in western clothes, with moko, associated with the New Plymouth district: Tamati, Tamati's wife and Tahana Hone. Tamati was a cousin of the great chief Te Wherowhero. Beautiful engraving of an emigrant's cottage on the banks of the Molyneux River in Otago, showing buildings, bush (flax and totara) and livestock. Illustrated article of the "Moho", the Takahe. The bird was captured near Dusky sound in the years before it disappeared until rediscovery in 1948 - an important article by Mantell Sold with all faults. Good. Item #018942
