America is celebrating the 250^th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  We all have our images of the growing country, an enduring one is that of New York. Renowned not only for its life, both commercial and cultural, New York also stimulates images of growth, skyscrapers, noise, and traffic. 

 

The bustle, and construction of New York, was a particular feature captured in the art and photography of the 1940s and 50s.  Artist,  J H Webster, here captures New York workmen constructing new buildings, and scenes of iconic landmarks such as Grand Central Station. 

 

We have for sale two of these original etchings, showing builders working on the foundations of a new skyscraper, and a street scene outside Grand Central Station.

 

These were formative days with post-war immigration, The New Yorker, the Rockerfellers and the Astors, and the New York school of Abstract Expressionism. As always, leading the way.
