1903. No Binding. Four sides of folded sheet, 18 x 11.5 cm. ALS to Mrs Walker on headed notepaper with 'Army & Navy Club, Pall Mall, SW' crossed out and 'Government House, Farnborough, Hants' handwritten in. Dated Jan 7, 1903. "My dear Mrs Walker, So many thanks for your most kind note. Please also accept my warmest and best wishes for a Happy New Year. But I think you are always happy! I suppose you deserve to be. I can always run up to town for a night & should like a "Play Party" immensely. Would you very kindly give me a little notice as I have several engagments of sorts. For instance I have to unveil a monument in Alton Parish Church on Wednesday (13) evening and entertain the Sec of State for War at Aldershot the next two nights. With many thanks. Yours sincerely, John French" Sir John French (1852-1925) joined the army in 1874, served in Sudan and the Boer War (1899-1901) and commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France from the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 until December 1915.
