Battle site from the War of the Spanish Succession, where the French were victorious, this being the last battle of the war fought in Flanders. Paul de Rapin (Thoyras de Rapin, 1661-1725) was a French historian who accompanied William of Orange to England in 1688, eventually returning to Holland and settling in Wesel in 1707. There he wrote his monumental History of England in 10 vols, written in French and dedicated to George 1. The Rev Nicolas Tindal translated and expanded the work in 14 volumes starting from 1727.
