Item #018854 Typed signed letter. Walter de la Mare.

Typed signed letter

1956. No Binding. TLS aerogram letter from Walter de la Mare in his sickbed to Ian Donnelly, literary editor of the Timaru Herald. Typed letter with hand-written note and signature at the end. De la Mare was bed-ridden at the time and the letter is a friendly discourse ("how I should love to have a talk") on his confinement, state of health, and asking if there is anything he could send Donnelly "any book, and record, anything which I could send you". The letter was dated and sent on June 20, and de la Mare died of coronary thrombosis two days later. Thus the letter would have been received in New Zealand after his death and is possibly the last thing he wrote. He refers to his nurse Miss Saxton who looked after him in his final year, and with whom he was in love. Very Good. Item #018854
