Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer (1836-1920) was a noted astronomer who, along with the French scientist Pierre Janssen, discovered the gas helium using electromagnetic spectroscopy. He was also the founder and editor of the preeminent science journal Nature in 1869, still probably the leading science journal for new research in the world.
