Single sheet from the London Illustrated News, Saturday, October 13, 1888. showing b&w sketches of scenes from the first match of a tour of the Maori football (rugby) team from New Zealand, playing against the Surrey Club at Richmond, October 3, 1888, The scenes show 'the two umpires' (one in a Maori cloak); the Maoris being cheered, the 'war cry' before start of play, the first goal being kicked, jubilation at the goal, three cheers for the visitors. On the verso, there is a short article describing rugby in New Zealand, the team, which was mixed European and Maori, their kit 'black knickerbockers and jerseys', and Maori dress.
