Item #019602 Civil War letters, America. Rob Brown.

Civil War letters, America

1863. No Binding. Three hand-written letters with stamped envelopes from a Civil War soldier R P Brown to his parents in New Jersey in March 1863, from Pott's Landing, Washington DC. He gives his address for writing as 'Rob P Brown, care of Captain J A Reynolds, New York Light Artillery Battery, Division, Army Corps. Washington DC'. The NY Light Artillery was a volunteer Battery raised by J A Reynolds of Rochester in 1861. In March 1863, it was assisting in the defences of Washington DC. It served at Antietam in 1862, and later at Gettysburg in July 1863. The first letter is dated March 4, with a stamped envelope dated March 6, the second March 8 and the third March 22. The letters talk of home, the hope that he would soon be home to take up his life again. He doesn't say a lot about the war, though in the third letter says that it is all quiet along the Potomac. The letters include a 4th addressed to Bro. Brown, from Newark, June 1892, possibly addressed to the same Rob Brown of the earlier civil war letters. Minor wear to folded joints. The three envelopes have Washington DC postmarks for the dates of the three letters. Very Good. Item #019602
