Wellington: 1869. No Binding. A pair of large, important original linen-backed, hand-coloured maps, both with similar titles, namely: Sketch map of the North Island of New Zealand shewing native tribal boundaries, topographical features, confiscated land, military & police stations, etc., Wellington, 1869 of the North Island of New Zealand. Both drawn in 1869, after the conclusion of the Taranaki, and Waikato campaigns. 1.this is of particular interest with regard to Maori engagement, showing "approximately the loyal and rebel districts - from the commencement of the Taranaki War to May 1869. Also the proportion of Natives in each district who have joined in the rebellion", and includes red painted marks showing "disaffected natives residing within friendly districts" 2.Is up-dated to December 11 1869, is." It shows armed constabulary stations, sites of imperial troops, tribal boundaries at the conclusion of the wars, names of tribes shown, confiscated land, stations of armed constabulary, names of stations. The map also shows goldfields, and probable localities where gold may be found, indicated with red dots. Both of these rare maps (82.5 x 55 cm} are in excellent condition, with some minor staining not affecting the images. They have considerable historical value, providing a wealth of information.
