The images are likely to have been taken in the late 1930s when New Guinea was an Australian-mandated territory. They show local people, villages and buildings, plantations, canoes and beaches, and one is an image with text showing an Islands steamer left high and dry after the devastating volcanic eruption in Rabaul, the capital town, in 1937.
