Hand-written letter
Alex Hogg, 1907. No Binding. Double-sided folded sheet, 20 x 12.5 cm. Includes an early picture postcard of French. ALS to Mrs Hall-Walker on headed notepaper, 'Government House, Farnborough, Hants'. "Feb.16.1907. My dear Mrs Hall-Walker, Your most kind letter has been lying some days at my little flat in London and I am truly sorry for the delay in answering. To my deep sorrow I must once again tell you I am quite unable to get away for the National. They find me a lot of work to do in London now and it is most difficult sometimes to miss the show ___ also. It makes it quite impossible to indulge in any such delightful changes as you are good and kind enough to suggest. Perhaps later on I may be able to persuade you to wine and dine and do a play or something in London? You used to be kind to me in that way once! When the Military authorities have done with me I am thinking of going into a monastery! as being the only kind of place which my present 'recluse' and unsociable life can horribly qualify me to frequent! It really was most kind of you to think of me and I feel this very much. Yours ever loving, John French" Both sides of folded sheet. Stamped, franked envelope to "Mrs Hall Walker, Frampton Court, Dorchester". Sir John French (1852-1925) joined the army in 1874, served in Sudan and the Boer War (1899-1901) and commanded the British Expeditionary Force in France from the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 until December 1915. An interesting comment about going to a monastery when the British authorities had finished with him! Very Good. Item #020066
