Peninsular War letters
No Binding. Nine hand-written letters concerning official, military and naval matter, four of them in Spanish. 17 pages, folio, slight fraying. Five of the letters, dated 1811 to 1814 are from the military physician and the Inspector of Hospitals, and Commodore zCollier, concerning the incidence and severity of yellow fever. The writers go to some lengths to provide reassurance that the incidence of yellow fever was not to be worried too much about. One (1813) refers to an enquiry from the Marquess of Wellington (later the Duke) regarding the issue. Yellow fever came mostly from the Caribbean and the letters note quarantine measures for troop ships arriving at the Iberian Peninsular. Two of the Spanish letters carry Wellington's signatures. "Wellington, Ciudad Rodrigo" which was his Spanish Dukedom. The Peninsular War, the allies against Napoleon, was conducted in Portugal and Spain from 1807 to 1814. Very Good. Item #020197
