Hand-written signed letter
1870. No Binding. Hand-written signed letter, on Kew Gardens notepaper, dated April 14, 1870. "Dear Grote, I have had communications with the Maingays sister, about this collection.....I suppose we had best buy them." Sir Joseph Hooker (1817-1911) was the noted botanist who succeeded his father, Joseph Jackson Hooker as Director of Kew Gardens in1865. He was President of the Royal Society in 1873-78. The addressee 'Grote' is possibly the historian George Grote. The collector Maingay referred to was Alexander Maingay (1836-1869) who collected plants in Malaya, China and Japan. He was murdered by rioting prisoners in Rangoon in 1869. 2 sies, 11.5 x 18 cm along with a letter addressed to Magg's of London, concerning Maingay. Very Good. Item #020274
