Photograph album. New Zealand & Pacific private tour collection

1884. Burton Brothers. Large 8vo. Hardcover. 41 pages of original sepia hand-mounted original photographs each 14 x 20 cm. Bound in blind-stamped original cloth with Scrapbook as title. The collection is fronted with a photograph of a large group of men and women having a picnic, cups of tea in hands. The collection includes early views of Auckland, Lake Rotomohama and several views of the pink and white terraces, Christchurch, with views of both the city and the Avon river, Dunedin, alpine scenes including Mt Cook, Milford Sound and a tourist steamship, harbour scenes of Suva, and the botanical gardens, and10 views of Fiji and Samoa. Many of the photographs are printed by Burton Bros. There is a particularly notable photograph of the steamship the Wairapapa dated July 84. This ship made its maiden voyage to the Islands in this year. The photograph shows more than 50 men and women in the front and on the ship. An interesting historic collection of a private tour, taken in the early 1880s (before the Tarawera eruption of 1886). Very Good. Item #020629
