Auckland: Josiah Martin. No Binding. B&W photograph of a young Maori woman in a korowai (fine cloak) and huia and peacock feathers in her hair. Some foxing mainly on surrounds. Image of face and cloak clear of any staining. Martin was an internationally recognised photographer known for his topographical and ethnological photographs, and a pioneer in wet-plate photography. On the reverse is an early photograph (foxed) of a small steam boat grounded on rocks with crew on the boat and ashore contemplating their situation. Mounted on early card from an album.
