World map. Orbis Terrarum
1748. No Binding. Copper engraving of Daniel Stoopendaal's world map. This was based on the earlier map of Nicholas Visscher, showing both hemispheres, and notably missing the east cast of Australia, only part of the New Zealand coastline, California as a peninsula, and no north-west coast of America. The map uses Tasman's findings, and was used in Dutch family bibles in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Dutch text on the verso headed Korte Beschrijving van de Landschappen des Werelts..., (Short descriptions of the landscapes of the world...) 49 x 34 cm. Marginal tears and a small part An extremely interesting pre-Cook view of the world, particularlyy the Pacific regions. Good. Item #020837
