'With the authors kind regards, August 9, 61.' Written in pencil: 'John Lort Stokes served with Darwin in the voyage of the Beagle, later commanding it.' Stokes served for on the HMS Beagle for some 18 years, sharing a cabin with Charles Darwin, and taking part in the numerous surveys and voyages of the ship. He was in command of the Beagle in 1842 when it conducted surveys of New Zealand and Timor. In 1846 he commanded the Acheron for fours years, surveying New Zealand. H retired in 1863.
