The Dook's Visit to the Land of the Moa, the Maori, and the Miner

Wellington: Tait & Co, 1900. 8vo. No Binding. pp 64, original illustrated covers with black and red advertisements. Illustrated throughout with line drawings and cartoons of major political and society figures, plus many full page advertisements. The work is a skit on the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V, to New Zealand in June 1901. Includes a spectacular fold-out of a procession led by Richard Seddon as King Dick, the diminutive Duke beside him, followed by Churchmen, judges, the mayor and ex-mayor, Judge Williams, and 'your cousin' labelling a Scottish character near the end. On the front cover is an inscription 'for Rouald'. Hiscocks was a leading satirist and cartoonist at the turn of the century, and Watts a prominent artist and supporter of the arts and craft movement in New Zealand. A very rare, entertaining, satirical and historic pamphlet capturing the politics of Richard Seddon and society at the turn of the Century. Very Good. Item #020997
