THE CHAMPIONS

March, 2025

Boy comics were big in England, running as serials, through the middle of the 20th C, particularly during wartime and into the fifties. They ran thrilling adventure stories, tales of heroic acts in the war, and comic strips. Their characters were clearly the forerunners of the  super heroes of the modern age.

One of the most popular and long lived was The Champion, started in 1922 and running through to 1955. The early issues are now greatly sought after, offering a glimpse of popular culture of the time.

We have a collection for sale covering the years 1944 to 1947 . These are of particular interest for their wartime content, and the emergence of a more modern Britain immediately after 1945. The issues are in their original, brightly coloured wrappers, still worth a read for the fun they provide, and their cultural history.
