A NOBLE SPORT
November, 2024
Amongst all the sports, cricket is something rather noble and grand. At its best, and putting aside body liners, underarm bowling and sledging, there is something rather noble.
The recent clean sweep of India by the New Zealand test side was particularly grand.
In the mid 19thc, there were world tours, where it was not unusual to find the odd Nawab or Maharajah playing in an Indian touring side. We have just listed a collection of 14 original photographs of Indian cricketers. One set is from around 1930, the other from 1971 including such players.
We also have other photographs on offer of cricketing heroes from the same period such as Dexter, Illingworth and Graveney.
We have nearly as many books on cricket as averages in a great career!!
Chapman’s The Game of Cricket from 1930.
Earlier books on cricket, include Fifty Years of Cricket, 1895, W. G. Grace’s Cricket of 1891, Routledge’s The Handbook of Cricket of 1862, and many others from the 19th C onwards.
Taking the time out to read a cricketing book is perhaps a little like putting aside the time to watch a 5 day test. Both are rewarding in these days of frenetic haste and short attention spans.
