AUTHOR'S COPY CANTERBURY DISCOVERED!
February, 2025
Don’t be fooled into thinking that geological reports are as dry as the stones they describe !!
Within these reports there are beautiful maps and fine lithographed plates, as well as accounts of exploration.
Dr Julius von Haast came to New Zealand in 1858, contracted by a shipping company to enquire on the suitability the country for German immigrants. He stayed and became one of our founding scientists. Haast established himself in Christchurch, surveying and exploring, Canterbury, Westland and the Southern Alps. His major single work of which have a very good copy, is (#19121) Geological Reports on Canterbury, New Zealand, pub.in 1864, and
contains a large folding hand coloured map of the Canterbury plains, plans and maps of routes across the South Island, fine lithographic views, etc.
An important work describing the mapping, topography and geology of the country.
Our copy has an inscription from Haast inside the front cover. He presented this copy to John Davies Enys, owner of Castle Hill station in Canterbury and a close friend, accompanying Haast on some of his expeditions. A rare work in complete form.
